Dissertation

How can you combined microbiology and music?
Well you can, and you should - its pretty cool what you can do with it.

Dissertation Project:
From Mushrooms to Music: The Creative Constraints of Mycelium Sonification

Mycelium within recent academic papers has been shown to produce highly structured temporal spiking activity. This dissertation situated between Bio-Music, sonification and unconventional computing, examines the creative constraints of mycelium activity within sonification design. Research conducted, aims to uncover to what extent interpreted data can be used within compositional contexts, and in answering whenever these systems can create meaningful contributions to musical systems.

Combined approaches of mycelium cultivation and bio-signal acquisition using adapted hardware was carried out to investigate these potential constraints. Activity was recorded and translated into sonic interpretations through techniques including triggering, convolution and generative texture processes. Subsequent cultivation data was used to measure signal integrity for analysis of effected sonic outcomes

Final conclusions find mycelium’s creative value lies within this capacity to challenge authorship. With mycelium-centric systems being best understood as an exploratory tool, rather than direct replacements of traditional methods.
